My Story of Transformations in the Age of Change

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change.”

Charles Darwin

ORIGINS: FINDING MY PATH

My professional journey began unconventionally — with music and design. At the turn of the eras, in the early 90s, I was passionate about music, actively performing and releasing my own tracks. My growing popularity and the need to tell my story coincided with the emergence of the first internet websites in the Russian-speaking segment. The solution came quickly: create my own website.

The phrase “Said and done” wouldn’t quite fit here. I had to master the basics of graphic design, programming, and, most importantly, animation. As a 3rd-year student at MGIMO, I launched my first website, created using Flash animation technology. A few months later, it received the prestigious Golden Flash Awards.

Within a year, I completed several orders from my first clients. By the time I graduated, my company already employed over 30 people. We specialized in graphic design, web development, and programming, taking our first steps in application creation. The company’s annual turnover exceeded 500,000 USD, which was a significant achievement for that time.

These years of experimentation and exploration laid a crucial foundation — the understanding that change is inevitable, and flexibility of thought becomes a key advantage in any endeavor.

FROM CREATIVITY TO BUSINESS: THE FIRST TRANSFORMATION

My creative beginnings allowed me to develop unconventional thinking, which later became my competitive advantage in the business world. Understanding design as a problem-solving tool helped me transition from creating visual concepts to brand strategies, and later to a more comprehensive discipline – business strategy.

Our consulting project, executed for a major international tobacco manufacturer, gained recognition and established us as experts in a highly complex market. Thanks to this case, we were among the first to explain to the Russian market how to build an employer brand and demonstrate how to make it attractive.

It was at this point that I received an offer to move to the client side and became Vice President for Corporate Communications at the country’s largest multi-profile holding company. This introduced me to the world of “big business,” and my responsibilities included interacting with government authorities. This became my first significant experience in political management.

GOVERNMENT SECTOR: POLITICAL MANAGEMENT

The next significant turning point occurred when I accepted an offer to join the government sector. Working in the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation from 2010-2014 gave me invaluable experience in managing large-scale projects, political management, and strategic planning at the state level.

This transformation required not only professional adaptation but also a serious personal restructuring — from business logic to understanding the goals and mechanisms of public administration. It was here that my deep conviction was formed: flexibility is not just a professional skill, but a way of thinking.

FINANCIAL SECTOR: NEW HORIZONS

My return to business happened at a new level — in the financial sector. Understanding the mechanisms of government agencies and established connections at the federal and regional levels allowed me to become the managing director of the unit responsible for all business with the government sector at Sberbank’s Corporate and Investment Bank.

My responsibilities included serving major government clients, managing large-scale privatization projects, infrastructure, and PPP projects. Under my leadership, over 50 deals totaling more than $1 billion were executed, including landmark projects such as financing the construction of the M11 toll road, the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD), and Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, as well as the privatization of major Russian assets – Alrosa and Bashneft.

Working in this position required deep knowledge in finance. Sber is an organization where not only business problem-solving is important, but also continuous development and learning. For me, it was a vital necessity – structuring complex deals is impossible without specialized education.

In addition to numerous courses and intensives in finance, I consciously invested in my own education and enrolled in London Business School, where I earned an EMBA in Finance in 2017. This became a powerful catalyst for further professional growth – I was promoted and took on the position of Senior Managing Director at SBER X.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND ECOSYSTEMS

The world was changing rapidly, and with it, my professional focus transformed. Working at SBER X immersed me in ecosystem thinking, venture investments, and digital transformation. All my previous competencies came in handy here — from creative thinking to understanding government mechanisms and financial expertise.

During my time at SBER X, I managed to build an investment pipeline worth over 3 billion rubles and launched a startup acceleration program in collaboration with international partners. This work allowed me to expand my international expertise and establish contacts with leading global technology companies.

At MTS Fintech and then at Rosselkhozbank, I continued to develop expertise in strategy and innovation, focusing on creating sustainable growth models in a rapidly changing environment. At Rosselkhozbank, under my leadership, Strategy 2025 was developed, which was approved by the Supervisory Board and allowed us to double the ROE and significantly reduce the Cost to Income ratio.

My experience in structuring complex deals and managing portfolio companies led me to the position of Investment Director at the sovereign investment fund of the Russian Federation – RDIF. As part of my responsibilities, I was nominated as a board member for major Russian companies, where I applied my experience in creating adaptive growth strategies across various sectors of the economy.

INVESTMENTS AND EDUCATION: SYNERGY OF EXPERIENCE

Today, as a board member and Deputy General Director for Development and International Business, I integrate all my accumulated experience to make strategic investment decisions in conditions of high uncertainty. Working at Prosveshcheniye Group allows me to combine investment expertise with influencing the development of educational technologies and shaping the human capital of the future.

Each new career turn not only expanded my professional horizons but also enriched my personal experience, forming a holistic vision of the interconnectedness of various economic sectors and an understanding of how to manage change at both personal and organizational levels.

MY PHILOSOPHY: ANTIFRAGILITY THROUGH ADAPTATION

Over 25 years of my professional journey, I haven’t just changed several professions — I’ve developed an approach to life and work based on the principles of strategic adaptation:

  • Embrace uncertainty as a given. In a BANI world, change is the only constant.
  • Transform consciously. Every change should be the result of a deliberate choice, not an accident.
  • Invest in development. Continuous learning is the key to antifragility in an era of change.
  • Integrate diverse experiences. My strength lies in the ability to see connections between different areas and transfer practices from one field to another.

My path from creative experiments to managing national-scale companies is a story not just of career transitions, but of purposefully building expertise in strategic adaptation, which I am ready to share to create sustainable growth strategies in an era of change.

“To live in chaos means to be flexible and ready to change every day. Movement and change become part of the DNA of each of us — a guarantee of antifragility.”
